Language Arts in 2nd Grade
Second Grade at Westerly builds upon the fundamental tools for reading, writing and presentation that the students built in their 1st Grade year. Though not thematic in nature, inquiry is still at the heart of the curriculum in which students question and explore ideas about word play, characters’ relationships and dynamics, making predictions, reading and writing poetry through a poet’s lens, and deeper exploration of the reading and writing of nonfiction. Throughout the course of the 2nd Grade year, students read novels including Freckle Juice by Judy Blume, James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl, The Magic Treehouse series by Mary Pope Osborne, Aesop’s for Children Native American Folklores, Owl Moon by Jane Yolan, Fantastic Mr. Fox by Raold Dahl, and traditional folk tales derived from student cultures. These extraordinary texts build upon the students’ own book choices as well as they continue to utilize Readers and Writers Workshop.
