Language Arts in 4th Grade
4th grade presents significant research, reading, and presentation skill development. Inquiry-based, the 4th grade Language Arts curriculum includes Readers & Writers Workshop, and features units focused on fiction, character analysis, nonfiction, research tools, poetry and historical fiction. Continuing to build vocabulary and spelling skills through Wordly Wise and Sitton Spelling, students also read various literature and texts including: By the Great Horn Spoon by Sid Fleischman, Make a Joyful Sound (Poems for Children by African-American Poets) by Eloise Greenfield, Gwendolyn Brooks, Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein, SIdeways Stories from Wayside School by Louis Sachar and Julie Brinckloe, and various nonfiction texts. Additionally students continue to grow their writing skills focusing on research writing, compare/contrast writing, poetry writing, and introduction to the literary essay genre.
