Grade 6 - Spanish

Grade 6 Spanish

The Spanish curriculum follows the national standards set by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). ACTFL standards are based on the Five Cs of language learning, Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities. In Sixth Grade Spanish students begin a more formal instruction of Spanish that includes, exams, textbooks and homework. Students have Spanish three times a week for 50 minute blocks. Sixth grade curriculum covers the first three chapters in the textbook Avancemos Level 1 as well as a beginning reader. Sixth Grade Spanish begins with introductory topics and vocabulary that will help set the stage for more in-depth conversation and learning. Target themes include after-school activities, describing yourself, daily schedules and expressing feelings. Grammar is taught within the context of each theme with integrated cultural information. Sixth grade students utilize subject pronouns, indefinite/definite articles and begin to work with present tense verb conjugations. Technology is used in the classroom  to expand their learning and expose students to primary sources. An emphasis is placed on study skills and through scaffolding students practice note taking, dictionary skills and organizational skills.
