Grade 8 Spanish


The Spanish curriculum follows the national standards set by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). ACTFL standards are based on the Five Cs of language learning, Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities. Eighth Grade Spanish students are expected to complete exams, homework, maintain notes and utilize their textbooks and readers. Students have Spanish three times a week for 50 minute blocks. Eighth grade curriculum covers chapters six through eight in the textbook Avancemos Level 1 as well as two readers one of which focuses on past tense conjugation and cognates . Target themes include sports, staying healthy, sending emails, phone call etiquette, daily routines and vacation activities. Grammar is taught within the context of each theme with integrated cultural information. Seventh grade students practice using irregular verbs, personal “a,” preterite regular verbs, reflexive verbs and the present progressive form. Students are encouraged to use technology outside of the classroom to expand their learning and through their personal interests, seek to advance their understanding of the Spanish language and its many cultures. Spanish learning at Westerly culminates with a service learning trip.

By the end of Grade 8 Spanish, students will:
  • Greet others using phrases, and sentences through oral and written communication
  • Talk about various topics, identifying what they like and don’t like
  • Ask clarifying questions related to each theme
  • Ask and answer questions about activities in the preterite tense
  • Comprehend, speak and write familiar words and phrases
  • Comprehend, speak and write familiar expressions
  • Ask for repetition and/or indicate lack of understanding in Spanish
  • Make comparisons and show possession in Spanish
  • Name all Spanish-speaking countries
  • Identify most flags and characteristics of Spanish-speaking countries and cultures
  • Present cultural information about their service learning trip
