Arts & Technology

At Westerly, we believe each child has a unique story to tell.  A diverse student body fosters a sense of community in which individual expression is celebrated and collaboration is encouraged at an early age.  Art helps develop critical thinking and problem solving skills that translate directly to other areas of study. 

We embrace the philosophy that art is a universal language that crosses all societal and cultural divides. Embedded in all cultures across the world, art has been used as language, as story-telling, as emotional freedom, aesthetics and expression since prehistoric times. By providing knowledge and skill sets, students can expand their creativity in all aspects of their lives.

2D & 3D Art at Westerly is a year-long course designed to instruct art students in drawing, painting, mixed-media, printmaking and sculpture. Students will become familiar with the Elements of Art and Principles of Design while completing a variety of assigned projects and experimenting with different media and processes. In addition to art production, students will be introduced to art history, art criticism and aesthetics. 
 

Westerly's Performing Arts program provides a comprehensive music and theater education where students develop foundational skills, build confidence, and discover the joy of performance. Our dedicated faculty—with specialized expertise in music and theater—collaborate to create a robust curriculum that honors both the distinct qualities and connections between these art forms.

Program Goals

• Develop understanding of the historical, social, and cultural practices and impacts of the performing arts
• Grow foundational skills across K-8 that prepare students for high school performing arts programs

Lower School (K-2) Students develop foundational understanding of music and theater, exploring rhythm, melody, movement, and creative expression through play-based learning and exploration.

Elementary (3-5)

• Recorder instruction (grades 3-4)
• Elementary musical production (grades 3-5)
• Beginning band and strings opportunities (5th grade)

Middle School (6-8)

• Instrumental Music Program
• Middle School Musical production
• Advanced performance opportunities

Westerly School uses technology to support inquiry-based learning through academic engagement, creative expression, critical thinking, and social-emotional reflection.  

We believe technology enhances collaborative inquiry, real-world connection making, and student’s unique expression of identity. 

Faculty and students utilize technology in various ways to engage in local and global critical examination, express multiple perspectives, and learn and present through dynamic platforms. 

Ultimately, technology strengthens Westerly’s mission and educational philosophy by facilitating deep learning and teaching to build a lifelong foundation for students to be the leaders, helpers, creators and change-makers of the future.
